以前的研究认为互联网超链的分布是“富者愈富，穷者愈穷”，少量网站占有大多数链接，大量网站被链接的数量很少。这种情况使得“超链分析”这一现代搜索引擎的重要武器对大网站效果好，对小网站、新网站或专业网站就效果不好。因此搜索引擎们在处理链接较少的网站相关性上不得不多下更多功夫。
